Wrong idea: Even at the very end-stages of HIV infection, the person continues to make antibodies, usually more than even a healthy person does. Immunity is far more complicated than "having enough antibodies" or other "pop" concepts. Humoral / antibody immunity is altered but enhanced in some ways, while cell-mediated immunity is greatly impaired.

A (+) ELISA test is always followed by a WB test. A (+) WB confirms an HIV infection. 

A (-) WB test means the ELISA was false (+). An indeterminate WB needs further testing.

Window period can mean (-) test.

Repeat tests &amp; checking HIV RNA levels clarifies this.

HIV: Under the circumstances you describe it is not probable that you have hiv, but without knowing when you were tested relative to the time of exposure and the manner of testing, it is not  possible to provide an accurate answer. You should be retested at 3 and 6 months for antibody or you can have pcr for hiv-rna at 3-4 wks but this is expensive.

Yes and No: Healthy people can get a positive screening test for hiv. Screening tests have high sensitivity but not very high specificity. Many issues can cause a false positive including flu vaccination. Mostly the cause of false positive is not known and it is not because there is anything wrong with the person who gets a false positive test.

No: Current recommendations include testing for antibodies at three and six months as well for the rare individual who does not immediately develop measurable antibody titers.  If you wish to pay for it you can be tested negative (or positive) immediately by checking for HIV rna.
