can a sliding hiatal hernia ever get well by itself?

Not really: A hiatal hernia is an anatomic abnormality that cannot correct itself.  However, people mistakingly refer to a "hiatal hernia" when they mean gastroesophageal reflux disease (gerd).  Many people with gerd have no hernia and many people with hiatal hernias do not have gerd.  Gerd can respond very well to conservative measures such as changes in diet, wt loss, medication, etc.

Probably not: Hiatal hernia is a bulging of part of the stomach through the esophageal hiatus into the chest. The incidence increases with age; up to 60% of individuals older than 50 have radiologic findings, but only a minority have symptoms. Surgical repair may be recommended when the patient has severe heartburn, inflammation of the esophagus from reflux, aspiration pneumonia. In most patients, antacids work.

i have a hiatal hernia and catch myself rolling over on my stomach when i sleep. well laying on your stomach cause the hiatal hernia to get bigger?

: Since the original surrounding anatomy of the diaphragmatic aperture around the esophagus can be slowly enlarged by increased intra-abdominal pressure from a prone position, it is likely that a symptomatic hiatal hernia will become larger, with more potential for adverse symptoms.  A diet to reduce weight will be beneficial to reduce need for surgical intervention.

does acid reflux cause a clogged throat? i have a hiatal hernia and i get severe reflux at night where my throat feels clogged and makes me feel really nauseous? hard to swallow at time as well?

: It will not cause clogging but irritation from reflux can give you that feeling. stop eating late at night take your prescribed meds for acidity, sleep with the bed with raised head end. If this does not help pl see your GI MD. Hope you feel better.

have a hiatal hernia and ibs. can ibs cause more reflux? i get severe reflux and have been constipated for 4-5 days. ive taken a laxative but takes 6-12 hours to work. have severe nausea. as well as bloating from all the gas. not sure what to do?

: IBS is a group of symptoms but I don't see a clear effect on a hiatal hernia. If you take fiber for constipation be sure to drink plenty of water with it or else gas formation can be severe. Drinking hot water or applying heat to the abdomen helps break down gas into smaller bubbles. Drink flat ginger ale for nausea. If you have the urge &amp; can't move, use dulcolax suppository or fleets enema.

Lot's of people...: ...have hiatal hernias, whether detected by x-ray or endoscopy. Most are sliding type &amp; appear intermittently, requiring no intervention especially when small. Pls call your doctor &amp; ask him/her your question to get a most accurate response re: hernia size as well its reducibility. Some hiatal hernias, like large paraesophageal ones, carry potentially great concern, but yours is symptom-free.

i have a good size hiatal hernia, with peptic ulcers. can this cause me to get chills an body aches only at night almost every night.

Not usual: You have a history of hiatal and peptic ulcers.  You have noticed night sweats and fevers.  It is unusual to think of peptic ulcers causing fever and night sweats if you are treated.  Start recording your actual temperature and time to see when it spikes.  Take this information to your doctor.  She/he will want to know the medications you take and any herbal supplements.  If you are loosing weight.

i have hiatal hernia/gerd(good diet +nexium 40mg).was cleared by 2 cardiologists(ecg, echo...), but every night i get tight chest/breathing diff.why?

Hernia ?: It could be the hernia if it is a large one and slides into the chest specially when laying down or eating a large meal. Hard to tell without seeing the studies done. Mention this to your doctor.

: Weight lifting can exacerbate the hernia so you should switch to hand weights only. If you still want to lift weights, you can do it with light weights which do not cause too much pressure increase in the abdominal cavity. I prefer you discuss the issue with your doctor or with an experienced trainer.

what are the chances of strangulating a sliding hiatal hernia? is it rare or common?

: I believe that only a paraesophageal hiatal hernia is predisposed to incarceration and strangulation. A gastroenterologist or thoracic surgeon can answer your question best,however.
