should a biopsy be done on the lung if has pneumonia?

Generally not: If pneumonia is community acquired, your physician will usually treat you with antibiotics given normal flora present in your community.  Biopsy is not required unless the pneumonia does not resolve and there might be cause for concern when considering your medical history.  In such cases, a bronchoscopy may be required.  This is rare if only a pneumonia is concerned.

Follow Dr's advice: A biopsy may not be much less invasive than resection. Complete removal and evaluation of the tissue by a pathologist is warranted.

Depends on fingings: If the doctor sees nothing abnormal, he would be unlikely to do a biopsy. If he sees a suspicious area that might be cancer for instance, then he would be likely to do a biopsy.

only 1: A muscle biopsy requires a surgeon to remove a square of muscle roughly the size of a cube of sugar.  This is sent to a lab which specializes in muscle and nerve pathology.

take tissue blocks: You can ask pathology department to give you (or they can send themself) tissue cell block or blocks with your core biopsies and slides, to your second opinion doctor. In this case you do not need to have biopsy again, at least until you hear second opinion.

my husband had an endoscopy done and they found e ulcersis it safe to assume they did a biopsy on him as well an is he supposed to be treated?

Endoscopy ulcer: You should follow up with your doctor or the gastroenterologist for tratment if they found ulcer, it needs to be treated with antibiotics and acid supressors, and discuss the question about biopsy as well.So if you have not done already make a follow up appointment with the gastroenterologist or your family doctor.

Through the rectum: After cleaning the lower colon, an ultrasound probe is inserted into the rectum to visualize the gland and lesions, if detectable. A modified large bore needle is used to take cores, usually multiple, from the gland. The tissue is examined by a pathologist for diagnosis. See this site for more info.

: A "hysteroscopy procedure" can be painful , especially with an intended biopsy of the endometrium.  Ask your GYN physician about doing a local injection of a caine derivative at "3 and 9 o'clock" on your cervix , which will greatly lessen any pain associated.  General anesthesia is not usually necessary for these kinds of diagnostic procedures.

is a biopsy routinely done during an endoscapy to rule out problems secondary to long standing chronic reflux when there are no visible abnormalities?

Accepted Answer

No: During colonoscopy, a biopsy is performed only if  there is a visible abnormality.  Biopsies can lead to perforation and bleeding and should be performed only for a good indication.

is it possible for an untreated keratoacanthoma to still be present after 3 years or is this concerning? it was diagnosed by appearance and growth-shrinkage pattern, but no biopsy was done?

: If it has not grown in size, causing bleeding or ulceration, you may watch and wait.
