i've been taking clindahexal and flagyl together for 5 days now for a dental infection, but the pain has not subsided. what's your advice please?

PCN yes, Flagyl no: Penicillin is a very good first line of attack against tooth infections.  Flagyl is an antibiotic medicaton used particularly for anaerobic (gram +) bacteria and protozoa.  In some cases, it is used an adjunct to for patients with stomach (gut flora) issues such as crohn's disease.  But rarely, is it the first choice for mouth/tooth considerations.

Flagyl: Flagyl (metronidazole) is an antibiotic that fights bacteria. Flagyl is used to treat bacterial infections of the vagina, stomach, liver, skin, joints, brain, and respiratory tract. Flagyl is not used for dental infections. Do not self medicate, please see your dentist for proper care.

i took vibramycin (doxycycline) 100mg capsule along with flagyl (1 each) for dental infection and now my stomach is burning like nausea. took it after food.

hi, in a g6pd patient,if the patient is allergic to penicillins then what are the alternative medications to treat dental infections in such patients.? also can metronidazole be given to a g6pd patient.? thanks?

: Most people who are allergic to PCN do not have problem with cephalosporin antibiotic so you can take first or second generation cephalosporin. Dentists commonly prescribe cephalexin (keflex). Erythromycin or clindamycin can also be used in patients with G6PD. We do not use metronidazole for oral condition but it is not contraindicated in G6PD patients.

No : Flagyl is not effective for yeast infection, it is an antibiotic used for bacterial vaginosis but can make yeast infection worse.

Antibiotics: Flagyl is used to treat anaerobic bacteria which are mostly associated with infections of the GI tract including biliary system. This includes gastroenteritis, diverticulitis, c. Diff infection, etc.

Not necessarily: Iv Flagyl is an excellent antibiotic and mostly given to cover anaerobic bacteria.

Wrong antibiotic: If you've been given Flagyl for an E. coli infection- that doesn't make proper sense, since it will not work against E. coli. I would call the doctor to ask 'what' they are actually treating and why. There are different doses of Flagyl (metronidazole) and 500 mg is a standard dose. Sometimes a doctor will dose adjust a medication depending on the patient and the infection. You need to get answers.

Usually not: Flagyl would cover many bacteria found in vaginal infections and other conditions but not necessarily be a good choice for uti. After culture results are known, it may be found to be effective against the infecting organism, but it doesn't work well for several common bacteria which cause uti. It is not a common first-line agent.
