Urine protein: When doctors are trying to determine how much protein a patient is losing in their urine, we often use a 24hour urine collection.  If done correctly, this can be very accurate for determining both protein loss and renal function.

is ig m the same as m protein? if i take a 24 hour urine protein test and i have low ig m will my m protein be low also? will stil test also be able to find bence jones proteins and light chains?

Terminology: IgM is a normal immunoglobulin that is first antibody in response to an infection. M protein is marker for a plasma cell neoplasm, in some cases a cancer. Small amounts of light chains are normally present in urine. Bence Jones protein is an old term for monoclonal light chains, once again a maker of plasma cell neoplasm, and often a cancer. You should talk to the doctor who is ordering the tests.

i had a 24 hour urine protein electrophoresis test. my total protein was 4 mg/ dl. ualbumin 0.6, uaphla 1 0.5, ualpha 2 0.6, ubeta, 0.7, and ugamma 1.7. no m spike observed. are these normal ranges? does this rule out myeloma and amyloidsis?

Not necessarily: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Talk to the doctor who ordered the tests. Having said that, why were these tests done? Do you have any symptoms? Both myeloma and amyloidosis are unlikely.

[protein]/[creat]: The concentration of protein divided by the concentration of creatinine. Make the units the same so that they will cancel out easily. This test estimates the amount of protein excreted daily assuming 1000mg creatinine excretion (in a normal person) daily.

very good morning doctors. i had a urinalysis. my uacr is 62. quest diagnostics refers to any number between 30 & 299 as "moderately increased." microalbinuria. my urine protein is 1+ how doctors treat this? can i do anything to try to lower this?

Need clarification: We need a lot more information on the type of protein, on the cell count, Cass, and other substance seen in the urine. You need to have the urine repeated, best first thing in the morning when your hydration allows a concentrated urine. You also need some blood testing to clarify and possibly further analysis. Your physician may have to send you to a nephrologist.

See below: It depends on her activity during the time that the urine was collected.  Vigorous activity increases the protein excreted in urine.  That is a very modest increase in the amount of protein in urine.  If a blood test of kidney function (serum creatinine) is normal, and she is otherwise normal, I would suggest doing nothing except repeating the test in 6 months.

after a 24 hour urine test, testing for preeclamsia my protein level was 621. how serious is this? what this tell you about my state of preeclamsia?

Preeclampsia: The cut-off for protein in urine in pregnancy is 300 mg; 621 mg is a little elevated, but still below one gram, which is 1000 mg, for example. In severe cases several grams of protein can be spilled in urine. To gauge the severity of the preeclampsia or to determine if there is toxemia of pregnancy, other factors are important like blood pressure, liver enzymes, number of platelets.

: Please patiently finish the work up, nothing to concern yet at this time. However, 24 hour urine test was probably ordered because of another abnormal result, probably quite high serum globulin, not because of mildly high serum protein alone.

Who's worried?: A protein reading of "trace" on a urinalysis is never worth worrying about. I trust you are not a diabetic or kidney patient. If you had a spot urine with a "high" (and that's more than "trace"),  but your 24 hour urine protein was okay, you probably have orthostatic or transient proteinuria. If your physician isn't worrying over this, you shouldn't either.
