Terminology: IgM is a normal immunoglobulin that is first antibody in response to an infection. M protein is marker for a plasma cell neoplasm, in some cases a cancer. Small amounts of light chains are normally present in urine. Bence Jones protein is an old term for monoclonal light chains, once again a maker of plasma cell neoplasm, and often a cancer. You should talk to the doctor who is ordering the tests.
