Many causes: The ca-125 blood test is very sensitive-- in many cases it is too sensitive.  In certain cases, it can be a marker of certain types of cancer.  But in other patients, a modestly elevated ca-125 is not alarming.  Visit with your doctor to better understand the details of your case.

i just received my blood test results which showed a ca-125 reading of 35. the blood test results showed hyper chromic microcytic anaemia.

Benign: A Ca 125 of 35 was found to be a useful cutoff point, with 99% of healthy women having values less than 35. Levels above 35 units are certainly seen in healthy women, but beyond the cutoff point of 35, the higher the value, the more likely there is trouble. With ovarian cancer, the levels measure in hundreds. Depends on what you are looking for. Repeat the test. You probably need some iron tabs.

hysterectomy & bilateral ovaries removed 17 yrs ago. recent ct abdomen says lesions in right and left adnexa, enlarged nodes. blood test results ca125 is 443 u/ml, ca19-9 is 161.7 u/ml, cea 72.8 ng/ml.colonscopy and endoscopy unremarkable.what next?

No: I tis only important to fast when eating can alter a blood test  result, which is the case when you check blood sugar and blood fats like cholesterol.

Depends: Best decrease is to normal values, less than 25. A good respond to chemo basically will show normal values that will stay normal. Any elevation of ca 125 after chemo may signal recurrence.

No need for ca 125: No good screening test for ovarian cancer- not a blood test, not an ultrasound etc. Ca 125 is very non specific- it is not recommended to be done as a screening test.  Only useful for somebody who has ovarian cancer and known to have related increased of ca 125 - to monitor response of teatment and as a follow up. If you're worry about ovarian cancer-you need to see a gynecologist.

Yes.: Ca125 can vary from person to person and can change under various circumstances not related to cancer. It is more useful as a way to track disease progression or treatment success.

Not useful: It is neither sensitive nor specific for ovarian cancer and is not useful as a screening test.  If elevated at diagnosis of ovarian cancer, it is useful in following the progress of tumor and response to treatment.

Not beneficial: The ca125 test is not used for screening for ovarian cancer because it does not work in the general female population. The ca125 can be abnormal in situations without any cancer and most importantly using this test does not save any lives like in the case of maamograms for breast cancer.
