Don't do it!: You should not remove a halo without the advice of your treating physician.  This device is important to provide stability to healing vertebrae.  Fractures that high up on your spine can be quite devastating as damage to your spinal cord at this level affects basic functions such as breathing.  Please follow your doctor's advice on this!

what does it mean if c1-c2 are incidentally found to be fused on imaging? what is the significance of this finding?

Accepted Answer

: This type of fusion in cervical vertebrae is reported in ~4/1000 people. By itself it is an interesting anomaly. It may or may not be associated with other problems in your future. Please discuss this with your doc who can monitor you for any related symptoms if they arise.

i have my c1-c2 fused together. after 19 years i am needing the hardware removed due to catching issues. any suggestions?

Depends: Depends on what catching issue you have
Does it cause pain, is it expected to get worse.Do you have osteoporosis?

Ligaments, tendons..: C1, c2, and the skull are bones.  Bones are connected to one another by ligaments and muscle tendons.

Varies: It varies somewhat based upon the exact nature of what you are discribing.  If you actually had an injury that actually led to a dislocation between C1 and C2, it is unlikely you would have survived, as a complete injury to the spinal cord at that level takes out the ability of a person to breath on his own.  C1-C2 instability is much more common, and a fusion is the surgery of choice.

Neck pain: Upper cervical disc issues will generally present with simply upper neck pain.  No associated radiating arm symptoms would be expected.  It would be possible, but unusual, to have significant spinal cord compression at these levels because the spinal canal is larger there.

My Opinion Only: but high cervical issues should NOT be addressed with spinal manipulation. Good chiros KNOW this and will only apply PASSIVE  treatments. My suggestion is a consultation with a SPINE expert....In Greenville seek an academic center's SPINE UNIT...

Os odontoideum: Os odontoideum is a small tip of the odontoid (peg of C2) that has become separated either congenitally or from remote trauma. In some patients there is no instability and with an intact transverse ligament no surgery is required. In patients with instability, the surgery can be performed from the back of the neck or through the mouth. Real time fluoroscopic images can determine stability status.

my top vertebrae (c1 c2) are unstable. 2day getting new zaps pain off/on near this area on left side where there's now a visible lump. is this urgent?

Accepted Answer

Depends: It depends in part on the degree of instability you have.  For most, it is minor and has no real consequence.  For some it is quite pathological and can cause clumsiness, staggering, difficulty walking, and even loss of bowel and bladder control.  Don't hesitate to be seen.
