Varies: It varies somewhat based upon the exact nature of what you are discribing. If you actually had an injury that actually led to a dislocation between C1 and C2, it is unlikely you would have survived, as a complete injury to the spinal cord at that level takes out the ability of a person to breath on his own. C1-C2 instability is much more common, and a fusion is the surgery of choice.
