Want off medication: I am not sure of  your age, so that  makes it difficult to answer your question.  Having an honest discussion with your doctor is needed, and this is also needed with your dad. The medication may be helping you, and this is likely why there is hesitation for you to come off the medication.  So, start  with an honest discussion with your dad and your doctor. Consider a slow taper of your medication

It may not stop.: Although this could be related to coming off medication - it might be a sign that you still need the SSRI. By the way - please don't drink if you take Lexapro (escitalopram). Please let your doctor know about your symptoms. Take care.

i'm on cymbalta normally anxiety/depression free. i have break-throughs. my mom, who's a rn, will give me xanax. how do u think buspar (buspirone) will affect me?

Depends: I've used Buspar (buspirone) for patients with anxiety with varying success. Typically it's used as a regularly scheduled medication 3x a day &amp; I've found success with this. Rarely I have used it on an as needed basis &amp; found a few patients who have responded well. It's less potent than Xanax/Ativan but those also comes with less risk for abuse. I like to trial it at 5 mg 3x/day prn &amp; increase as needed.

See below: If the 2 medications you are on are not relieving your symptoms and you cannot tolerate other medications you need to consult with apsychiatrist to help you get on a regimen that will relieve some of your anxiety/depression symptoms.

If you were being treated for a first episode of major depression, the standard of care is to treat for 1-2 years (one year and if doing fine taper the meds over the next 3-6 months or longer). SAMe: SAMe has been available as a dietary supplement in the US and it is available without prescription. There is no data on drug interactions between these drugs. Always talk to your doctor before taking any new OTC or prescribed medicine.

Possibly: But why aren't you taking a prescription medication instead of 5 htp? When involved in polypharmacology it is much safer to ensure that your prescriber is aware of, and helping to supervise use of all of your medications. Did your medical provider recommend the 5htp?

Hard to know: If you were being treated for anxiety and depression with Lexapro, (escitalopram) and then stopped it, there is an excellent chance the illnesses will relapse and you will experience the symptoms of that.  It's just like treating high blood pressure or arthritis or diabetes--if you stop the treatment, symptoms return.
Please call you treating physician and discuss this in detail.

Unlikely: Both Buspar (buspirone) and Lexapro work for anxiety so if you stop one and increase the other the net effect should be to not make a difference in your anxiety level.

is there any particular type of anxiety/depression you would use viibryd (vilazodone hydrochloride) for..as it seems like an ssri plus buspar only--could it be helpful for ocd?

It is new: It is a new antidepressant. There are many treatments available for ocd. Zoloft (sertraline) works well at high doses. Often adding a low dose of a neurolepyic like Risperidone can help the antidepressants work better.
