Monitoring Centers: Lymphatic system absorbs/carries things too big to go into the arteries/veins like bacteria eaten by white cells and digested food. Lymph nodes "taste" the lymph for anything bad  like bacteria/viruses/cancers, etc. When it detects a problem, it alerts the immune system and your body reacts.  They enlarge in response to the inflammation they create when they react.  They shrink when all is well.

i have hit my head verry hard and are left with a bump behind left ear. i can't seem to touch it without feeling any discomfort and pain. should i worry about it. it's been 3 days now.

Doctor can evaluate: A person should go to the ER or see her own doctor if she:  vomits more than once, loses consciousness over 30 seconds, has a headache that is worsening, has changes in her behavior such as getting irritable, has changes in coordination such as clumsiness, is confused such as difficulty recognizing people or places, has changes in speech, or is just very worried about the situation.

Likely a gland: You may have more than one problem. Just focusing on the lump. If it is clear or looks yellow likely a cyst - especially if it has been here for a while.

Possibilities: Lots of possibilities on this one, and fortunately most are no problem.  If bump is painful or growing rapidly, see your local doc.  Most likely a cyst of one type or another, and using local heat to the area may help it go away.  Cleanse thoroughly and watch for any redness or further swelling.  If the area is very dark or very discolored, see your physician as soon as possible.

Likely normal: If the bump is semi-soft and mobile (you can roll it around0, and not changing in size it is very likely to be a normal (or mildly reactive) postauricular lymph node. Consult your doctor if it is getting larger and/or painful.

Probably not problem: Obviously it is impossible to tell you what this is as there are many possibilities, but most 1 cm bumps in that area that don't change are benign; it is probably a cyst. There is no need to rush to the doctor, esp. if it remains stable, but the next time you see your  doctor (probably in not too long a time if you are a hyprochondiac :) ask your doc to look at it and then your doc can monitor it.

: Could be a swollen lymph node. Occasionally when there is a vaccination, sinus infection, sore throat, ear infection or other local infection, the lymph nodes in the neck and behind the ear can become "activated" and fill with immune cells and other immune components. This means that your immune system may be fighting off some kind of infection. If it lasts longer than 2-3 weeks, talk to your Dr.

Cyst: This is either a sebaceous cyst (epidermal inclusion cyst) or a trichilemmal cyst.  There is a small chance of this being a lymph node, but if the overlying skin is red and it looks like it is coming to a head then it is the former.  They are benign.  Treatment when inflammed is a moist heat pack several times/ day and time.
