Ampicillin: In English, the drug is ampicillin, a very safe drug -- a kind of penicillin. Entirely different than sufa-trimethoprim (Bactrim). What sort of infection do you have? Ampicillin would be good for some respiratory infections (strep throat, bronchitis, etc), but unusual treatment for any other bacterial infection. I would be especially skeptical if prescribed for male urinary or genital infection.

Self prescribing: A tooth infection will not go away on it's own even if you take antibiotics. The cause of the infection needs to be determined and treated appropriately. Most patients who self prescribe end up with more serious problems. Can you take it (if you are not allergic to it?) We can't stop you but it's not a good idea. Call a dentist who can discuss it with you over the phone and advise you what to do.

Same: They are almost the same. Stop the ampicillin. Do not take these meds without a clear indication. Prolonged or frequent exposure can cause C. Diff. which is very serious.

See Urologist: After 2 courses of antibiotics, is likely that your problem is not bacterial.  Viral or fungal etiologies come to mind, and both have slightly different clinical presentations.  Would recommend seeing a urologist if your PCP's care has not helped.  There are treatments available once a proper diagnosis has been made.

15 weeks pg was taking 250mg ampicillin every 6 hrs for strep throat for 2 days. now switch to 500mg amoxicillin 2x/day. took amp at 1:30 when to take?

Doesn't matter: You can start the amoxicillin whenever you wish. These are extremely safe drugs:  you could take ten times as much of either one, or both of them, without harm to you or your baby. Don't worry about it. Best wishes for quick success in treating your infection and for a healthy pregnancy and baby.

Should not...: If you have not being diagnosed and prescribed the antibiotic by your doctor or any other medical provider please do not take it without an evaluation especially if you are pregnant. There are vaginal infections that can be treated with different medications depending on what it is. You should not self prescribe especially if you are pregnant.

Yes/No: I'll answer second question first - strep throat is still 100% sensitive to Ampicillin/Penicillin/Amoxicillin, so there is no need to switch antibiotics. But yes, you do need to increase the dose. 1000mg per day would be fine, but it must be divided into four 250mg doses to be effective at eradicating the strep. Just taking 500mg twice a day or 1000mg once a day is not going to cut the cake....
