i've seen my doctor about bruising under my toenails and they said it would heal on their own. the bruising is getting bigger, what do i do now?

It takes time: The bruising getting bigger is not big deal. When the blood underneath your nail dries up this is what ends up happening. It takes 4-6 months for you nail to regrow back. However, see a podiatrist to make sure you have "bruising" and not something else.  Also did the doctor tell you why and how you got the bruising?

Nothing: Unless you have significant pain there is nothing to do. The dark spot will be shed off the edge a year later. If you wave difficulty walking, see a DR.

You can't: It takes months for  dried blood under the nail to grow out. Why are you getting bruises? Are you on blood thinners? Wear high heel shoes?

Dark mark: Hello. If you recall an injury, then it could be a small hematoma or bruise. It can last several weeks and like a bruise on the skin should change in color, size and even maybe in exact location. Could also be nail fungus (make sure it is not on the toenail). Lastly, if it has been there a while (a month or more), i would recommend a dermatologist see it. Rarely melanomas can be under the nail.

Need to examine: If you did not hurt it and it appeared on its own, it would be prudent to have a doctor examine it in case, by remote chance, it is a melanoma.

Usually time: If the bruise is not too extensive it will grow out with the nail in several months.  If you have a lot of pain, see a podiatrist.  Sometimes a hematoma under the nail plate needs to be drained to afford pain relief and prevent secondary infection.

Sounds normal.: These take weeks to months for the nail to grow out. Bruising under the nail is of no particular consequence but if painful can be drained by creating a hole in the nail with a red hot paper clip or by drilling with a needle.

Should see surgeon.: Should see surgeon or dermatologist  or podiatrist to evaluate.
It could be a harmless hematoma that might cause nail to come off and resolve or it could be a melanoma and require surgery.
