Upper Airway : A breathing tube can definitely be traumatic to the tissue leading to swelling or inflammation. Secondarily getting infection in this tissue is possible. If the phlegm is worsening or the cough is worse please contact your physician.

Hyperthyroidism: Hyperthyroidism is treated with medications, I-131 ablation or surgery.  Swallowing problems may be present with large goiters or nodules however there are multiple other causes.  These rarely result in breathing problems.  Other etiologies for cough and breathing problems should be explored with your physician.

Exam: You need to be examined and have a full physical as this has hung on too long. Your doctor will listen to your lungs, possibly get a chest x-ray and blood work. Antibiotics without an examination are rarely the right answer.

Retinal detachment: Once you have surgery for retinal detachment it is hard for another detachment to occur secondary to a severe cough.

Swelling from tube : You probably had a breathing tube during the surgery.  Your body now has swelling from the tube that was in your airway.  This should get better.  If you have difficulty breathing see your doctor.   Otherwise try to deep breath 10-15 times every hour and cough up any mucus.  Drip fluids like juice and water.  If you are diabetic watch the sugar.

: During the ACDF surgery, the esophagus is moved aside for approaching the spine so complication may involve the esophagus. If you have not seen a gastroenterologist for these symptoms you should be referred. A swallowing study (esophagram) can be ordered by your primary doctor in the mean time if not done yet.
