how much space/cushioning is in between the brain and skull (in units)? how does the cushioning protect the brain from everyday head movements?

0.5-1 cm: The brain is surrounded by cerebrospinal fluid. It does not touch the inside of the skull. So when the head is "jerked" the brain floats in the CSF and the blow is cushioned. It goes back to the physics. A fluid cannot sustain a pressure gradient.

intermittent stabbing pain to l temple and base of skull on l side. increases with sudden movement. been going on about 2 weeks. possible cause?

Long list of Dx's: So you should see a MD (Neurologist) or go to urgent care immediately.Young people w/headaches require imaging ie a MRI at a minimum especially considering this increases w/movement.Headaches are a very common occurrence.The causes range from benign to life threatening. ie migraines,occipital neuralgia, inflammation, giant cell arteritis,stress &amp; more serious conditions: stroke, brain tumor &amp; HTN.

Ans: Sounds like you strained your neck. Do you work?  What kind of work do you do?  Start with heat over the neck and passive neck exercises if discomfort continues see your doctor

You have been evalau: From your  background information I see you have been evaluated. Was the MRI of the brain or the neck? How was the diagnosis of benign intercranial hypertension made? When you discuss this with your physician. Diltiazem is a calcium channel blocker  and can cause headaches. Was it given for headaches. Your physician can help clarify this.

at pt today had manual movement of skull bones. my front teeth still hurt and lower jaw still feels pushed forward.  never had this before.  weird?

Manipulation: I strongly suggest that you see a physician for a proper neurologic and musculoskeletal eval and assessment to rule out any significant pathology. I would also be concerned about nerve compromise and / or ligamentous instability caused from the manual manipulation that you underwent.

Good sign: Especially if the responses are reliable and reproducible. Maybe a neurologist can answer too. Removing part of cranium may help further.

Brain symptoms: If one were to get an infection in the scalp and that infection was to erode through the skull and into the brain, one would be able to theoretically feel that. In general when one gets a brain abscess they present with headache or seizure.

Mechanistics: Concussion by definition is loss of consciousness, loss of memory, or combination of both.  Caused by transient impact on base of brain, brainstem, but any additional brain trauma might cause post-traumatic encephalopathy.

You'd be surprised: Experimental studies evaluating the brain's displacement during a head-on injury have tested speeds as low as 2.5 m/sec or 5 mph and shown that the brain will move a few mm (reference: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/1691964). Modern imaging including MRI demonstrates that even if the brain doesn't move a lot within the skull, diffuse axonal injury from shearing forces can still occur.
