0.5-1 cm: The brain is surrounded by cerebrospinal fluid. It does not touch the inside of the skull. So when the head is "jerked" the brain floats in the CSF and the blow is cushioned. It goes back to the physics. A fluid cannot sustain a pressure gradient.
