it is 3mon post csection.i have severe constipation.does staining during bowel causes hernia? i am scared!! do stitches cut open.what should i avoid?

Very Little: Three months is the standard time for complete healing of most abdominal wall incisions (time to reach &gt;90% of preoperative strength). Infection and re-operation through the same incision affect the healing time adversely, Diabetes, heart or vascular disease, smoking and obesity also impair the normal wound healing process. Check with your surgeon.

Wound infection: Something definitely is wrong. Could be a wound infection. Should not be draining fluid and/or hot to touch. You need to see your surgeon asap.

Possibly: These are pretty non-specific symptoms for an infection. The weakness and lack of energy are probably the most worrisome. If it was a wound infection, I would expect wound to be red and swollen.

Also could be infection of the mesh, although more likely, you are just accumulating a seroma (fluid collection) around the mesh.

Call your surgeon!: Vomiting and pain in the setting of intra-abdominal adhesions could indicate a partial bowel obstruction or recurrent hernia.  You need to get checked.

Yes: They should be normal. You may be advised to take stool softeners if you are taking narcotic pain medications as they can be associated with constipation.

Variable: While the percentage of patients alive at five years from many stage 4 cancers is low, it is not zero, and you never know which group you are in as an individual. That doesn't mean to ignore the stats, but in the end, you are not a statistic, but an individual. It should be mostly about quality of life rather than quantity for most folks, so don't give up hope, and have an active say in your care.

See your doctor: Any hernia that has bowel involvement should be evaluated and treated accordingly before is too late. You are taking a risk of getting the bowel twisted (strangulation) which will increase complications after surgery.

could a bowel blockage and double hernia be corrected during the same surgery?

Accepted Answer

Yes: Simple answer is yes.  Sometimes if the bowel blockage requires resection of the intestine, hernia repair may be delayed or temporized.  You don't want to risk contamination of hernia repair with bowel surgery.  Some evidence exist that it is safe to repair hernias with mesh even when there is some contamination from bowel surgery.

can an inguinal hernia cause bowel obstruction?

Accepted Answer

Yes: If the hernia becomes incarcerate the loop of bowel is trapped in the hernia and may be twisted as is its blood supply. This usually requires emergent attention and probable surgery. Do not delay as the trapped bowel could become ischemic from lack of blood flow and then you have a much more serious and complicated problem.
