when riding a horse, my ankle sometimes wobbles onto the outer side and it hurts. also one of these long bones in the foot (metatarsal or one of the joints there) starts hurting when i ride. would an ankle brace help? i have injured this ankle before?

Metatarsal pain: I understand the need to want help with your pain. The question is what is wrong. You should be seen by a doctor in person. There are too many possible reasons for the pain to comment on this forum

See below: This problem mandates a real-time (face-to-face) meeting with a doctor.  A history has to be taken along with a examination as well as labs and other tests.  Only after all this will his doctor be in a position to tell him what's wrong and what needs to be done to help him.

Tight muscles: Bone spurs are caused due to stress on the bone.  Typically in the foot and ankle this can be due to arthritis, tight Achilles tendon and calf muscle and plantar fascia.  When these muscles and tendons are tight, they pull on the heal bone causing stress, and the result is to make more bone which is the form of a bone spur.  Treatment, stretching of the Achilles tendon and plantar fascia.

why do i have 2 ankle bones on both feet?

Accessory bone: What you are most likely looking at is your medal malleolus (the normal ankle bone on the big toe side of the ankle)  and an accessory navicular bone. These occur frequently and can be quite large.

Tendonitis possibly.: See a doctor for a proper evaluation.  X-rays may be necessary.

Sprain/tendonitis: A sprain is common in the lateral ankle area however peroneal tendonitis can happen too. There are, of course, other reasons however maybe your doctor can pinpoint the reason for your pain anatomically.

A couple of things: Posterior tibial tendonitis, tarsal tunnel syndrome these woud be at the top of my list.

Flat feet?: People with severe flat feet can have the appearance of bone protruding on the inside of the foot.  Other things could be the cause as well.  Evaluation by a podiatrist could help find the cause of the problem.

Avoid weight bearing: If pain worse/ may need xrays to evaluate for a fracture. Partial or non weight bearing with use of non steroidals beneficial. Seek a podiatrists help as warranted.

Ankle imbalance: Your flat feet are causing you to walk improperly. You need to see your local podiatrist for  orthotics and a full evaluation.
