Yes and no: I would not say it is normal, but rather it can be seen with the type of injury you are describing.  A bruise to the bone can cause localized soft tissue swelling in the area in which the nerves pass.  This may cause a radiating pain, numbness or pins and needle sensation in the ankle and foot.  If it does not resolve, you should be checked.  Thank you for the question.

Ortho: If there is a bump that wasn't there before, there may have been a subtle fracture that didn't show on the initial films. When bone heals, it forms a bump called a callus.
Might see orthopedics and have additional imaging studies as recommended

: When treating a patient I always listen. Because you will be told the answer. Four weeks in a boot for a “ bruise” should be time enough to heal. Maybe bone was dislocated as apprise to being fractured. Further studies , bone scan? MRI ?  Even second opinion if needed. When patient does not respond re access the diagnosis.

Lots!: Bone bruises are actually contusions that cause swelling in the bone itself.  A bruised toenail is otherwise referred to as a subungual hematoma.  Nails grow from the nail matrix which is part of the skin.
