Assume they are: I seldom went to the added expense of sending a sample to the lab. The frequency of MRSA in small to large abscesses exceeds 60-70% in outpatients. It is not the new bogeyman,although you wouldn't know it from all the news stories. There are multiple meds that easily kill the germ.Big ones often need to be drained to heal. Fever a week ago is probably unrelated.

Yes.: Boils are collections of pus under the surface of the skin. If they are mature, they can be lanced (drained) in the clinic. If they are not mature, options include antibiotics, warm compresses, and watchful waiting. Many boils (also called abscesses) start out as a simple folliculitis, an inflammation of a hair follicle. If your dad received neither drainage nor antibiotic, seek a 2nd opinion.

Acne or Infection: Boils in the underarms could be from and infection or related to acne.  One should be cultured to rule out infection.  If related to acne, various treatments may help including benzoyl peroxide, and topical and oral antibiotics.  In severe cases of a condition called hidradenitis suppurative, surgery may be the best option.

Multiple: factors.   Hygiene, take 1-2  daily baths  and soap each armpit for 3 minutes.  Use a  mild deodorant  in small amounts.  Check for diabetes with your primary doctor.

It's not primarily an infection, so antibiotic ointments or pills usually don't help very much. Discuss it with your doctor. If s/he is unfamiliar with HA, see a dermatologist. Good luck!

what should i do about a boil that will not drain, but is not painful at all? started out hard and painful, but is now soft and unnoticeable minus the unsightliness of a large (by large i mean maybe 3/4" across) on my arm. it's now been about 8 days
