: By the new guidelines, you have borderline hypertension. Either systolic pressure (upper number) above 120 or diastolic pressure (lower number) above 80 is in the borderline category. Combined weight loss and exercise can lower 10% of you blood pressure which will put your numbers in normal range, i.e. 120/80 or less. If you like salty foods like chips, stop them may also normalize your numbers.

Other ways to help lower blood pressure is to reduce your salt/sodium intake, exercise regularly and decrease your stress levels.

You need to establish with a health care professional to determine what factors you can change or modify (weight and food are only part of it) to get your blood pressure under control as soon as possible. You risk kidney failure, heart disease, stroke and premature death if you don't start doing something about it now.

Not usually, unless: Your vision is only affected by extremely high blood pressure, when the effects of high BP affect the retinal vasculature ;/or optic nerve (malignant hypertension). Furthermore retinal blood vessels can be blocked causing loss of vision. Too low of BP usually causes people to feel faint ; pass out. Too low of BP has been thought to contribute to worsening of optic nerve blood flow. Goal bp: 115/70.

High blood pressure: Depending upon age, we typically won't treat high blood pressure unless it exceeds 140/90 in those younger than 60yo while we wait until greater than 150/90 for those older than 60yo. Years of high blood pressure increases risk for stroke, heart failure, kidney failure etc. However, one can also pass out immediately from low blood pressure. Discuss options w/your family doc.

A little: The top number (systolic) is a bit high if that is consistent. Take it at different times of the day for a while. If it stays that high on average, see your doc - easily treated if need be!  Be well!

BP meds & ED: First of all, high bp, especially high systolic bp, is not good for your erectile function. If you are older, this is especially so. Diuretics such as hydrochlorothiazide and spironolatone as well as beta-blockers such as atenolol can cause erection problems. There are some BP meds that may help you with erectile function, including arbs such as losartan and Alpha blockers such as doxazosin.

Yes: If you checked this pressure twice, once on each arm and this is the reading, then go to er asap. 110 diastolic at your age is hypertensive urgency/emergency. You could develop a stroke or heart attack.
