Blood like stool: If your child stool is like currant jelly and is having abdominal pain he should be seen on an emergency basis by your doctor or go to the er. He may have an intusseption. Otherwise, check to see if he has rectal fissure from passing hard stool.

Infectious ?!?: This would be a common presentation for salmonella or shigella bacterial infections. I would have the kid seen/tested.

Bloody stool: Your child may have passed a hard stool in the past and created an anal fissure. With the fissure present you may find blood on the stool. Warm sitz baths are recommended along with a nupercainal ointment to relieve the pain.

Bloody stool: Constipation &amp; straining  can cause anal fissures &amp; hemorrhoids leading to bloody stools, but other conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease, krohns disease, polyps cause rectal bleeding. You need to consult a gastroentrologist. At the mean time try to control the constipation with high fiber diet, plenty of fuids, use miralax (polyethylene glycol) or miniral oil. If the bleeding is heavy go to ER.  Good luck

No....: The black flecks can be food related or blood related. You can have three separate stools guaiac tested as well. Take a look at diet and see what might me being digested and possibly then appearing as black flecks...Also could this 2 year old have eaten something like crayons that might be doing this?

Stools: These are often a reflection of dietary intake, but can represent inflammatory changes in the colon. This sounds like a brief normal variation but if there is persistent mucous in the stool or a suggestion of blood you should have the baby seen by the pediatrician.  Try using yogurt (unpasteurized). Ingestions: When infant starts crawling at 9 mo, the whole house should made child proof. There should be no small object on the floor. Small toys/ parts, lego pieces, coins, medicine, candies, pieces of papers are commonly ingested.  At 6 month well child visit, pediatrician gives anticipatory guidance on this. Your child must have ingested the glass piece. Keep eye on the stool for any other object/blood.

Varies: If it came from the outlet, it would be bright red. If it spent some time in the intestine, it begins to break down and change color. Currant jelly purplish for higher in the colon, black and tar like if it came from the small intestine, and like coffee grounds if it came from or above the stomach.
