Probably not: Sudden onset pain usually is associated with something like a muscle tear or cyst rupture if the pain is very localized to behind the knee, not involving the entire lower leg. However, any time there is concern about a possible blood clot, you should be checked by a health professional.

i am 21 wks preg & think i have a superficial blood clot behind my knee. i think it was caused by too-tight compression socks during prev preg (sig edema & socks top band was too tight). can this turn into dvt? treatment?

Maybe superficial: This is likely not DVT.  DVT usually is associated with leg swelling and pain.  DVT has a higher incidence in pregnancy.  If these symptoms are present, contact a provider.

my son was in a car accident and has a blood clot behind his knee causing pain and cant put much pressure on the leg. his pcp wont put him on blood thinners because he has a ct scan of the brain scheduled for may 10. should we go back to er?

: I would go to the ER. He might not be alive May 10. The clot can dislodge and travel to the heart and you might die. They can make their way into your lungs.  Go to the ER.

Not usually: If you are concerned about a blood clot you need to see your physician for the correct diagnosis.  You may also need to discuss anxiety if knee pain makes you think of blood clots.  Knee pain is usually due to injury or arthritis.  See your doctor to also rule out a bakers cyst which is fluid leaking from the joint usually after an athletic endeaver.

Possible thrombosis: Nuvaring is associated w increased risk of local thrombophlebitis, deep vein thrombosis (blood clot), arterial clots, &amp; other vascular related disorders.  Removing the Nuvaring is a good idea, but if it is a blood clot it needs to be addressed by a doctor.  Need a vascular ultrasound, possible blood thinners (can start aspirin meanwhile), etc.  Call the prescribing doctor or go to ER is after hour

Knee pain: Unlikely that this is a blood clot. It would not be expected that there would be pain on top of the knee and on the sides. Blood clots usually cause pain in the back of the knee primarily.
