Hard lump: Hard lump at injection site is a small collection of blood called a hematoma. This occurs when the tip of the needle grazes a small blood vessel called a capillary.   It isn't dangerous and will resolve on its own.

HematomaWillResolve: You just had a polio shot and red sore appeared.It is nothing to worry about.It is little clotted blood under your skin as the needle might have caused a little bleeding under your skin.Put ice pack on it and if it is painful take over the counter pain medicine.It will resolve by itself and you may see a bruise at the site.An injection does not cause infection so soon suddenly.

When?: A   'lump' is a scap hemorrhage qutside the brain and as such needs no particular treatment other than time, head injury can matter in old people. Those on anticoagulants and if it was associated with loss of consciousness or vomiting or iprolonged headache it should be investigated.  Severe head trauma can be life threatening in the first 12 hours or so if accompany by a so called extradural hema.

Other symptoms: Watch for lethargy, vomiting, change in behavior. If she lost consciousness, please see a physician right away. Observe closely and if changes occur, report to a physician. Apply a cool compress to the area and use children's Motrin for relief. 
Other areas may also be injured, watch for signs of pain or lack of use of digits, arms and legs. May need imaging.
