For : For throat pain you can take advil or tylenol (acetaminophen).  Continue drinking plenty of fluids. If you have worsening pain, fever, rash or vomiting though you are going to have to be seen.

This must be treated with antibiotics. See your doctor who can do a throat swab and then treat you.

Antibiotics plus.: If you have a sore throat with a positive swab for streptococcus pyogenes, i would recommend taking the course of antibiotics that was likely prescribed to you. I would stay hydrated and take any tylenol (acetaminophen) of Ibuprofen to help with any fevers, if any.

Keflex: First, be sure you are really (or still) allergic to penicillin.  Second, make sure you really have strep throat (some people have strep in their throat all the time!).  Then your doctor can choose from several different cephalosporins.  The cheapest one is the generic form of keflex.  Zithromax is a distant third choice because rarely the bacteria are resistant.

TO shoot or not?: First, you don't want a shot of Ampicillin - you would want a shot of penicillin, because there is a long acting form of that which will treat your strep throat.  There is no long acting ampicillin.  Then, it depends on each individual - if you are good about remembering to take your oral medicine and take them all, then pills work fine.  If not, or you are vomiting, then the shot's the way to go.
