what sleeping position is best to avoid shoulder pain?

No best answer: The real question is what is the shoulder pain from? Is it inflammation of a bursa in the shoulder, muscle related or even a tendon tear? The possibility of a referred pain into the shoulder from neck joints(facets) or nerve roots is also possible. Finding the underlying problem is the first task. Then making sure your laying in a position that will not worsen that underlying pathology.

See below: Neck pain usually comes from a degenerative joint or disc in the neck.  Sometimes it's from a muscle strain or sprain. It is common for neck pain to refer to the shoulder blade.  Early treatment options include a short course of nsaids (Advil, Aleve), gentle massage, moist heat, and focusing on posture.  If pain lasts greater than 2 weeks see your physician.

Take it easy!: If is just soreness it will get better in a few days. If the pain is still there after 2-3 days, then you may have a sprain/strain and you should visit your doctor for an evaluation. Sleep on your back: Avoid sleeping on your shoulders, or sides.  Try to keep arms down to your side.  Don't sleep on your stomach.  To help keep your arms to your sides, and not above your head, wrap your arms with  soft pillows and safety pin them on.  This will weigh your arms down a little, and you will be less likely to sleep with them above your head.
