No such thing!: There is no magical super food! please eat a mixed diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, nuts; low in saturated fats, no tobacco, no more than one drink a day and exercise at least 30 minutes each day. Maintain a healthy weight.

: Probiotics are just seed colonies of safe germs known not to cause disease in the GI tract. When taken they can introduce these colonies that grow and crowd out germs or yeast that may be harmful. Taking them after a round of antibiotics that can kill off some good gut germs is reasonable. Taking them all the time may or may not give any boost to anything.

Any symptoms?: There is no objective evidence pro-biotics provide any benefit. 
For good health - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Drink enough water daily, so that your urine is mostly colorless. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form. 
Practice safe sex, if you have sex.

Not unusual: Processed foods tend to be low in fiber. Unprocessed foods are higher in fiber which leads to softer &amp; more frequent stools. Probiotics can also increase frequency of stools. Having up to 2 soft stools a day is normal for those on a healthy diet.

what's the difference between taking a probiotic in pill form, and consuming fermented foods high in probiotics like kefir?

Pro mean with: and bio means life.  Probiotics help the GI system digest food.  Anti means against. So, if one takes excessive antibiotics (which are sometimes needed) they can kill off the good bacteria in our GI systems and we can have digestive problems.  Pros and fermented foods have similar qualities but look for higher number of strains in pros rather than higher amounts.  They interact.
