Preservative free: This response is specific for the person and their specific underlying cause or reason for using artificial tears. In my experience the most success is with refresh advanced, retain MGD, refresh celluvisc, md Bion tears. I have had a lot of success with recommending Systane Balance although it has preservatives. Once again it depends on your underlying reason for using artificial tears.

Safe: The phosphate salt is for pH balance and not for anti-bacterial use.  Your body is full of phosphate salts and they are an important part of your metabolism.  Nothing here to worry about and it is safe to use long term.

Stop using: Stop using the products. Find the products that maybe a little difference or just use normal saline.

Sjogren's: If you have sjogren's as the cause of your dry eyes, preservatives can cause more ocular irritation compared to a person who does not have sjogren's.  I honestly do not know which one is the best though systane is popular. Flax seed oil which has omega 3 has studied in sjogren's and demonstrated improved with dry eyes. Your eye doctor would need to answer the ? About Restasis preservatives.

Artificial tears: You can use artificial tears long term. Most formulations are found in over-the-counter sections and are safe. Restasis appears to be effective and can be used for long period of time, but i would try to go off of it, say, after 3 months to see if the function restores on its own.

Yes: Non preserved artificial tears are often recommended for the treatment of dry eyes in individuals  who are sensitive to preservatives. There use can be very frequent (every 30' or so) due to low surface irritation side effects. Just as with any eye drop medication, avoid contamination of the dropper tip. Non preserved drops last generally 1 day, &amp; are best refrigerated in between uses to protect.

Artificial tears: There are over the counter preservative free alternatoves. They come in individual vials and each last 24hours after opening. Give those a try.

Pretty much equal: There are a variety of over the counter preservative free lubricating artificial tears available and they all work relatively well.  Different brands may be more or less effective in an individual patient.  Refresh optive, Celluvisc, Systane and Blink are all high quality preservative free brands.

g'day. i just found a couple of boxes at home of 28 individual plastic vials of "thera tears" lubricant eye gel (preservative free. active ingredient sodium carboxymethylcellulose 1%) expiry july 2018 & wondering if they are still okay to use? thanks?

No!: Liquid or soft (paste, cream, gel etc) medications should not be used beyond their expiration date. Dry medicines (tablets, capsules, powder etc), if they appear intact with no change in texture or color, may be used for a short time after their expiration but with due caution (monitor their effectiveness and side effects)
