Artificial tears: You can use artificial tears long term. Most formulations are found in over-the-counter sections and are safe. Restasis appears to be effective and can be used for long period of time, but i would try to go off of it, say, after 3 months to see if the function restores on its own.

Any tear substitute: There are a great many drops for dry eye. For longterm use i recommend preservative-free ones to avoid allergic reactions. Restasis is dilute cyclosporin, an immunosuppressant only available with a prescription
