for skin issues... Use bactroban (mupirocin) or Bacitracin as well.

Serious infection: Not that simple MRSA is serious infection and public health concern , has to follow cdc  guide lines to treat it , first if there is abscess  necrotic tissue  must be treated by drainage & debridement , Clindamycin , amaxacilline with tetracycline combination is frequently used combination. All depends c&s report . Discuss with your doctor.

Depends. : Depends on the examining doctor who is taking care of his medications. As u may have been explained Remicade ( infliximab) may allow infections to become life threatening. If IV antibiotics are contemplated they can be administered at home with an indwelling peripheral vein catheter and nurse home visits. Sometimes just drainage of abscess is all that may be required. Close follow up is key.

should i use mupriocin to treat a superficial mrsa infection on the underarm? should i use mupriocin oinment under a bandaid or get a perscription for an oral antibiotic? i noticed it two days ago but it is not yet to point that it needs drained. will mup

First : First of all, not all skin infections are staphlococcal, not all staphlococcal infections are mrsa.  Mrsa is short for methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus, a potentially dangerous type of staphlococcus bacteria that is resistant to certain antibiotics and may cause skin and other infections. As with all regular staphlococal infections, recognizing the signs and receiving treatment for skin infections in the early stages reduces the chances of the infection becoming severe.  Staph infections of the skin appear as a bump or infected area and may also be red, swollen, painful, warm to the touch.  If there is evidence of liquid underneath, or a head, it may be full of pus and will need to be drained.  If accompanied by a fever or red streaks around the skin, this may be evidence of spread.

Mupirocin is used as a topical treatment for localized bacterial skin infections, including treatment of mrsa.  But with all "superficial" infections, except for minor redness, pain or light drainage, if any of the other symptoms listed above are found, you should see your physician for consideration for a systemic, either oral or injection antibiotic.

i am being treated for mrsa sinus, middle ear & skin infection with oral/topical antibiotics; sulfamethoxazole tmp ds & mupirocin .. what would be the treatment if it is in my blood? & where would i go? are there any oral prescriptions?

: With MRSA bacteremia (bacteria in the blood) you have to be treated with IV antibiotic(s), usually in the hospital first. In certain conditions, the treatment can be done outpatient when antibiotic infusion can be carried out and monitored.

Depends on source: Hospital acquired mrsa infections usually require iv vancomycin for coverage. Community acquired infections often are responsive to Sulfa meds like bactrim, (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) and/or clindamycin. Best to get culture and sensitivity testing done.

Darwin: Darwin would have predicted this.  Everytime antibiotics are used, a very few number of bacteria survive because they had some random mutation that gave them an advantage.  Eventually, these resistant strains become common and give us things like mrsa.  As we continue to overuse antibiotics, more of this will occur.

Not necessary: MRSA is no longer a microorganism confined to hospitals and tertiary care facilities.  It was confined primarily to these locations prior to 2005, but now it is everywhere.  It is no more pathogenic than its cousin MSSA (Methacillin sensative staphococcus) which is all over us as well.  You should not have to avoid people.  This is not to say go around touching people with your infected body part.

i keep getting mrsa, and i'm allergic to most antibiotics that treat it, what should i do?

See below: There are two options.  1) use antibiotics that are effective against MRSA (there are several now) and that you're not allergic to.  2) get desensitization therapy to one of the antibiotics you are allergic to.  This is done in a controlled ICU setting under the direction of an intensivist and allergist.
