when does someone need to see a colorectal cancer surgeon?

Colon tumor: Most patients with colorectal symtoms are seen by a GI clinician.  If a lesion found which can  not be removed by colonoscopy then patient is referred to colon surgeon who will review situation to define which interventional procedure is needed to completely remove the tumor. This may be done laparoscopically or if needed by formal laparotomy

Not sure: I see under conditions you listed pain and swollen glands.  I assume these are painful enlarged lymph nodes.  If that is true, it is very good that you asked for medical advice from those doctors and is reassuring if they said no cancer.  Also, cancer of the lymph nodes (lymphoma) is usually not painful, but infection may be.  The only definitive way to exclude cancer is a lymph node biopsy.

Not a good idea: I usually recommend 6 weeks post op for any trips other than emegency.

There are several: First speak to your family doctor who will refer you to a breast surgeon  ( most of the health insurance requires referral ) , or call a medical centre close to you ,they will provide a list then you  choose .

BIMC: I would strongly recommend that you see dr. Lou harrison in manhattan at beth israel medical center. He invented the ham applicator (harrison, anderson and mack), which allows intraoperative radiation to the sacral bed if a cancerous tumor is found.

His surgeons are excellent, but the availability of intraoperative radiation is just as crucial to outcome as good surgical technique.

"Best" = Subjective: I have no idea about sydney. But "best" is subjective, even when evaluated in an "objective" systematic fashion.  Technically best surgical technique?  Difficult to assess. Best outcomes - more objective data, but may be biased by patient selection. Best bedside manner? Most publications? Most well known? Best from a hospital (revenue generation) standpoint? Ask around, but realize caveats.

Only members of the american college of mohs surgery (acms) are fellowship trained to perform mohs surgery. All members and fellows of the acms are listed on their website directory. Surgery or radiation: For prostate cancer localized to the prostate, and sufficiently high risk that active surveillance is not an option, both radiation therapy approaches (usually with brief hormone treatment) and radical prostatectomy (surgery) offer similar survival statistics.  The side effects and the time required to go through and recover from treatment are different.  The end result is the same.
