Surgery or radiation: For prostate cancer localized to the prostate, and sufficiently high risk that active surveillance is not an option, both radiation therapy approaches (usually with brief hormone treatment) and radical prostatectomy (surgery) offer similar survival statistics. The side effects and the time required to go through and recover from treatment are different. The end result is the same.

Your approach, : Seeking multiple opinions to come to an informed decision is really the only best way. At 56, most would forego active surveillance and recommend treatment. For surgery, seek someone who is experienced, as this is the most important factor with respect to complications...Not whether it is robotic or open. In radiation, make sure you learn about the different types. Good luck & i wish you well.

Knowledge is king: Treatment decision is based on pathology, stage, psa, and concurrent illness/disease. Many men, regardless of age obtain no benefit from PC treatment. Some men gain significant benefit. Suggest you see a gu medical oncologist to review all options including deferred or delayed therapy. Recent study shows no beenfit for surgery in this setting as well. http://bit.ly/lk3kkd.
