approximatey 3 weeks ago i was stung on the inside of my elbow (in the bend) by what appeared to be a sweat bee.  i immediately applied alcohol to the sting.  it has itched in that area every day since the sting and i apply alcohol each time it itches.  yesterday a cluster of 12-15 small bumps appeared in the area of the sting.  i am looking for advice on how to treat the area as it itches also.  thank you.

rash possibly related to sweat bee sting?

See dermatologist: It might be infected. See dermatologist for either tx of the allergic nature of the sting or a secondary infection.

Can't tell without : Seeing it. Hives? Normal sting symptoms may include pain, itching, swelling, redness ; tenderness of the affected area. Milder allergic reactions: swelling of &gt; 4 inches (baseball), nausea, GI cramps, diarrhea. Severe allergic reactions may present with swelling of tongue, mouth, lips or throat; difficulty swallowing ; breathing, wheezing, tightness of the chest, hives, generalized weakness, .

Benedryl: The nasty reactions(breathing pbs) to a bee sting will be evident within 15-20 min if they require er care. Swollen extremities or hives can often be minimized by giving Diphenhydramine (benedryl) in proper doses every 4-6 hrs. If the kid has major sx like abdominal pain & lethargy with the event, a workup by an allergist may be worthwhile soon as rxns can worsen in the future.

will my 4 yr old daughter likely be allergic to bee stings if her mother has anaphylaxis to bee stings? she gets a rash with amoxil (amoxicillin).

Uncertain: There is no guarantee that she will develop the same allergy as her mother, and the rash with Amoxicillin also does not suggest what, if anything else, she is allergic to. The best advice would be to see your physician who can perform either rast testing (blood test) or skin prick testing while keeping the mothers history in mind.

Connection not likely : Hives 1 1/2 wks after having been stung by a bee are probably not from the sting but rather a reaction to some food eaten, medication being taken, a soap or shampoo or other substance to which you have been exposed, or even a reaction to a bacterial or viral infection.  Antihistamine is often helpful along with cool compresses. If not better in few days, suggest evaluation by your primary care provider.

How severe?  where?: Local symptoms from stings can often last several days.  Secondary infections from stings can also occur.  If you are having hives, breathing problems, or severe swelling, you need to see an allergist immediately for treatment.  Once your symptoms resolve, you should be tested to see if you have bee sting allergy.

Maybe: Have the spot checked...I am concerned there can be a retained insect part causing all this inflammation. Alternatively some people just react strongly to bites. Try an otc Hydrocortisone and ice the area.

Possibly: Some bee sting victims develop exaggerated redness and swelling at the site of the sting that gradually enlarges over one to two days. This is called a large local reaction and peaks at about 48 hours and then gradually resolves over 5 to 10 days. If you have this, you can use nsaids for the pain, in addition to other meds your doctor can prescribe for other inflmmatory symptoms, like itching.

Allergy is relative: The normal body response to a sting includes localized swelling at the site with redness. It can be transient or last a few days. Some respond with greater swelling and redness that can involve extremity swelling. If a sting triggered abdominal pain, cramps, a feeling of being lightheaded or worse, you have a worrisome response & need an evaluation for be sting allergy.

Bee Sting: See your doctor as soon as possible, or go to ER or urgent care center today.  You may have cellulitis and may need treatment.
