It depends: If the bone is fractured, it can take about 6 weeks. Lesser injuries can heal sooner. It really depends on the type of injury.  Seeing a podiatrist can answer this more specifically.

10 – 12 weeks: Fifth metatarsal base fractures are very common. Bone healing is common in 10 to 12 weeks. On occasion, there is an asymptomatic fibrous union – the fracture line is still apparent on x-rays though there is no pain. Fifth metatarsal shaft fractures (jones fractures) are associated with delayed healing and sometimes nonunion. These can require open treatment with bone grafting ; internal fixation.

i am trying to decide between fusion or screws between my 1st and 2nd metatarsal for a lisfranc injury. been told fusion is too new- what do you think?

Get Details: The lisfranc joint often requires fusion using screws when the joint has been dislocated or is unstable.  Get the details from your surgeon so you can make a good choice. The procedure is not new and many foot and ankle surgeons do this procedure on a regular basis.

Cuboid subluxation: Sometimes the foot tries to bend where it shouldn't at the metatarsal cuboid area and things shift slightly out of place. A GOOD orthotic with a pad placed under the cuboid can start the process of recovery

Time to get help: With your symptoms, I would recommend that you see an orthopaedic surgeon for exam and xrays.  There are a multitude of different diagnoses that could cause such sx.  For example, if you are a runner, you may have a stress fracture.  Get an appt. and good luck!

Varies: There are a number of potential causes including a nonunion of your fracture, the development of post-traumatic arthritis in adjacent joint, an associated soft tissue injury, irritation by a pin or screw are among the many possible causes.  Don't hesitate to follow up with your surgeon to discuss your specific case.

i broke my 5th  metatarsal in my right foot. i'm currently in a walkin boot. can i swim with this injury as a form i rehab?

Yes: Swimming is great exercise, and as long as you do not put weight on the affected foot you should be fine.
Ps don't forget to remove the boot.

i have pain and inflammation at the base of my 5th metatarsal on my right leg. is it an injury to the peroneous tendon? it hurts to walk.

Accepted Answer

Could be: Peroneous  brevis tendon attaches there  and helps evert/pull foot outwards. You can also suffer from a bursitis (fluid sac) over the base where the bone protrudes. Stress reactions or fractures of the base of the 5t metatarsal also will gin=ve you pain there. See a doc get examined x-ray +- mri. If tendon should feel a bit better in a low wedged heel that takes some of tension off tendon
