Probably not: Probably not but i would not recommend a night guard for a child under 16 years old because their jaws are supposed to expand and widen out their faces.  If your child is grinding his teeth at night, he might have an airway/breathing problem.  Have his pediatrician evaluate his nasal passages to make sure adequate air exchange is occurring.

Depends: If appliance is flat plane, it will allow your muscles to go to tonus position and this is where your bite will fit best.  You may need an occlusal equilibration to make the teeth fit together at this relaxed position.

Comfort and fit: The over the counter products can be convenient and less expensive but oftentimes do not fit quite as well.  A product made in the office may cost a bit more, but the fit will be custom, feel better, is adjustable, and better tolerated.  With that in mind, it is likely worn more by the patient.

Good Question: The dentist created night guard is custom made to fit your mouth exactly. It typically is designed to suit your particular needs and help reduce the trauma of bruxing and grinding that can occur. Store bought types of course are not as effective, and should only bus used as a "last resort" in my opinion.
