Lymph node: Glands are an indication of inflammation and swollen gland in neck are quiet common in kids . They could be due to viral infection like runny nose or due to ear infection, throat infection, dandruff and sometimes due to more sinister causes too. Glands secondary to sinister causes usually do not disappear . Might be worthwhile getting child examined by GP.

Someone needs a look: Usually painful swelling in neck is a lymph node responding to an infection, possibly a pimple or sore on the scalp.  You will probably feel better putting a bit of heat on it but don't mess with it too much or it could get worse.  If it doesn't get better after a few days, see someone.

Difficult to answer: Your wife needs to be seen, have full exam and then a correct DX will be make.  It is impossible to give her reassurance that nothing serious is going on without an exam.

Infection: It sounds like a complicated infection with cellulitis and edema.  I would seek medical help as soon as possible.

Not Ca: In this region nodes not common.  If present they are inflammatory from the back of the hair line or scalp. There are other nodules such as small sebaceous cyts and lipomas that may feel like nodes.  If increasing in number or size, check with LMD for dx and if necesary bx.

can clenching teeth cause swollen one side back of neck?

Probably not: If you are swollen, you may have an infection.  You should see a physician to rule out neck problem.  If it s a surface skin problem, they may refer you to a dermotologist.  
Teeth clenching may cause mild to moderate jaw muscle pain and rarely neck (muscle) pain, but not swelling.

Yes: However this needs t be examined both when it is swollen and when it comes back. 
Your other listed conditions could point to other causes besides infection and labs may be needed.

Could be: Could be swollen lymph node, more likely muscle spasm.  Try acetominophen or Ibuprofen heat, massage, stretching. See md if persists more than 102 weeks or if worsening.
