White tongue common: The tongue is known to have many variations with pigmenting, size, appearance, &amp; not always due to disease. Causes of a tongue that looks white include: lichen planus (responds to steroids), white sponge nevus (familial, benign, permanent), smoker's leukoplakia (2% risk of cancer, needs biopsy), hairy leukoplakia (due to epsteinbarr virus), warts (due to papillomavirus), "thrush" (rx antifungals).

Sore throat: Start gargling with warm salt water 2x/day.  If there is post nasal drip, use nasal steroid like over the counter fluticasone or nasacort (triamcinolone) as directed.  Call your doctor 
if no better or any worse in next 2-3 days

Nothing major: Nothing major going on here. You are seeing your salivary glands on the tongue more than likely. Could have thrush/a yeast, based upon the white color, but if its not a scrapable coating likely non specific and nothing to worry about.

The fact that your tongue is white leads me to believe you may be dealing with an oral fungal infection called thrush. You will need to see a doctor to confirm the diagnosis and start treatment.

May be normal, but..: Normal tongues may have a slight whitish top layer and red bumps on the back of the tongue from different types of papillae.  However, without actually being able to see your tongue, you should have your own dentist take a look just to be sure.  There are certain conditions that need treatment or attention so do not assume that everything is normal unless actually seen by a dentist.

Tongue dryness: If the nasal airway is blocked(inflammation of the tissue covering the turbinates(caves inside the nose), enlarged adenoids, tonsils, we are forced to breathe through the mouth. This will dry the tongue as well. There may also be a thick coating on the tongue that can be brushed off.
