ive just had a mini tummy tuck with lipo of flanks. im 10 days post operation. when i sit my lower belly now makes a roll of fat over the incision and the incision tucks in. othis normal due to swelling? will it go down to make a flat belly?

Depporends...: On what you weigh and what your target is. Because these procedures remove excess skin and fat from localized areas, they are not for weight loss--if you have them and lose significant weight, much of their benefit will be lost and you will have excess skin again! i ask my patients to be within 10-15 pounds of their target weight before having these operations.

Tummy Tuck: Medical reasons for tummy tuck would be primarily related to infection or other problems with redundant skin. Otherwise reasons would primarily be cosmetic.

Body Contouring: Initially the weight may go up after surgery because of the IV fluid given in surgery and inflammation associated with normal healing.  In general neither liposuction nor tummy tuck should be viewed as weight loss operations because in appropriate patients the tissue removed should not weigh more than about five pounds. Any other application of these surgeries is unsafe.

Not usually: However if you have gained a significant amount of weight, you may be putting undue stress on your diastasis repair which could be associated with umbilical pain or you may have a hernia. I would discuss with your surgeon, you may need to perform diagnostic imaging.

A conditional Yes: A tummy tuck or abdominoplasty can be desirable for any patient with excess abdominal tissue or laxity of their abdominal muscles.  The ideal is to lose weight before surgery (while not using an extreme diet), but this is often not possible.  Your surgeon would be able to recommend whether surgery is advisable or not.

i'm torn between having a tummy tuck versus the gastric sleeve. which one will be more beneficial.  i weight around 190lbs and 4'11.

May not be candidate: May not be a candidate for tummy tuck after the gastric sleeve [depending on the placement of the incision] and paradoxically not till the wt is lost either. If you can lost weight with lifestyle [diet, exercise] change, you are by far better off. Have TT after that- a great reward to yourself!

will i gain weight in weird places after a mini tummy tuck? ive heard that liposuction sometimes causes fat to accumulate in weird places on the body. is this a risk with a mini tummy tuck?

In : In a mini-tummy tuck the only skin and subcutaneous fat removed is from below the belly button. If you were to gain or lose weight after this surgery it may effect the way your abdomen looks but should not cause an odd or unusual accumulation of fat elsewhere.

: At least after 4 weeks to start with light exercises and gradually increase the intensity of your workout, 8 to 10 weeks would be safer for more intense exercises such as weight lifting. Good Luck.
