: The best method for detecting most cases of irregular astigmatism (IA) is by corneal topography, which will show asymmetrical steep and flat areas of the cornea. Most eyes have at least a small amount of IA but gross irregularities occur with keratoconus or traumatic corneal scars. In advanced cases, spectacle lenses may not adequately improve vision and rigid contact lenses may be required.

Please see an eyecare provider to fit you well and recheck the fit after a few weeks use!  you are not obligated to buy any product there. No: A tonometry test determines the pressure in your eye.  Astigmatism is most commonly determined with a refraction, the test to find your glasses prescription.

Topography: The most accurate way is to do a topography - a machine shines rings of light onto your eye and then analyses the reflection. It then creates a surface MAP - sort of a 3d interpretation of all the lumps and dips on your cornea. In the end it tells you how much and where you have astigmatism.

Serial neuro exams: In addition to being followed by a pediatric ophthalmologist I would make sure that you have a good pediatric neurologist and a pediatrician coordinating care. Not necessary to have more tests per se but careful serial exams, and monitoring for pituitary dysfunction (in case nystagmus is due to a condition called Septo-Optic Dysplasia

Depends: The internet tests are only approximate.  The optometrist will supply a better answer and the best will come from an ophthalmologist.  If the increase is small, you probably don't have to get new eyeglasses.

Oval eye shape: Refractive errors require either plus (farsighted) or minus (nearsighted) glasses + an extra amount if the eye is oval in shape (astigmatism).  These are called refractive errors and can be corrected with glasses or contacts.  The list of other eye problems is long and these are usually unrelated to astigmatism.

Usually not: Astigmatism is a physical curvature aspect of the cornea and lens of the eye which in effect makes the eye oval.  The term astigmatism is from physics and is not usually a bad thing.  The correction is a reverse oval in the eyeglasses or contacts.  Most astigmatism is small and easily corrected.  Sometimes it is large or irregular and that make perfect vision difficult. Instead of the cornea having a symmetrically round shape (like a baseball), it is shaped more like a football, with one meridian being significantly more curved than the meridian perpendicular to it. Astigmatism usually causes vision to be blurred or distorted to some degree at all distances.

Yes: It can be treated with the laser or incisional techniques.  In most cases, astigmatism is not treated surgically but with glasses or contact lenses.  Having astigmatism is normal.  Most people have it.
