Oval eye shape: Refractive errors require either plus (farsighted) or minus (nearsighted) glasses + an extra amount if the eye is oval in shape (astigmatism). These are called refractive errors and can be corrected with glasses or contacts. The list of other eye problems is long and these are usually unrelated to astigmatism.

Astigmatism: Astigmatism is one type of refractive error. Myopia (or nearsightedness), hyperopa (or farsightedness), and astigmatism all can cause refractive error. Refractive error is what causes a patient to require glasses or contact lenses to see better. Astigmatism is typically when the cornea is shaped more like a football than a basketball. Glasses, contact, and LASIK can fix this problem.

Corneal curvature: Astigmatism just means that your cornea is not perfectly spherically shaped and instead has different curvatures in different directions (kind of like a football in the extreme example). Everyone has some degree of astigmatism although not everyone has enough to notice it. I doubt you "need" any surgery.

Most cases can be corrected by glasses/cls, laser techniquesand lens implant technologies (toric lenses).

Irregular Cornea: Astigmatism usually is caused by an irregularly shaped cornea. Instead of the cornea having a symmetrically round shape (like a baseball), it is shaped more like a football, with one meridian being significantly more curved than the meridian perpendicular to it. Astigmatism usually causes vision to be blurred or distorted to some degree at all distances.

Astigmatism: Astigmatism occurs in about 60% of eyes. It is an ovalness of the eye corrected with a reverse oval in the eyeglasses and contacts. The degree is quite variable and most have a small amount but you need to see your ophthalmologist to have yours measured.

Most certainly: Astigmatism is a condition where the cornea is off-round in one or more planes. It is treated very successfully with corrective lenses that correct for the visual distortions caused by the mal-shapen cornea. Astigmatism can also sometimes be treated surgically with laser surgery and other techniques. See your local eye care professional to see what options might be best for you.
