ive been having to cough a lot to clear my throat, have had a hoarse voice and sometimes a bit of difficulty swallowing food. i suffer from asthma, allergies and acid reflux, all of which im taking medicine for. could this be a bigger problem?

Possibilities...: Allergies can cause many different symptoms so being evaluated by an allergist may be a good place to start to figure out what is causing your symptoms. Once an allergist finds out exactly what your allergies are, treatment can be given that will hopefully relieve your symptoms!

Muscle spasm?: Asthma does not cause swallowing problem. What you may have is likely from muscle spasm or obstruction at the esophagus. You need to see a doctor to find out the cause.

my throat feels weird, kinda ticklish and it hurts to swallow. all this after taking my asthma inhaler. is that a normal side effect?

Speech and Swallow: Please ask your PCP for an evaluation also with speech and swallow specialists. Your PCP may also like to order a barium swallow test. Autoimmune disease is one possible cause or a lodged foreign body. Monitor for fever, and please have an evaluation soon.

Re-visit the doctor: Hello.  You may have some chest soreness due to the increased work of breathing that you experienced during your asthma episode.  The sore throat and head pain are not typical following asthma exacerbations.  If acetaminophen or ibuprofen have not helped the pain, you should see your doctor.  You may have a throat infection that could require antibiotics.

Gag reflex: Lots of people have a difficult time swallowing pills, so you are not alone.  When you eat food, you just swallow, not thinking about it.  The act of swallowing a pill, or a non-food entity, brings out your gag reflex.  With practice, you should be able to get it down.  Practice with m&ms - it worked for my kids!

See a specialist: Start with your primary care physician.  If he or she cannot diagnose your problem, you may be referred to either an ENT or gastroenterologist for evaluation.
