20-30 minute : Dobuling time. E. Coli and grow and divide every 20-30 minutes. The spread depends on the type and amount of material inhaled, and the immune status of the person.

i may have aspirated bread because when i coughed 7 hours later a crumb came out. i am still coughing 18 hours later. it seems that the bread may be stuck in my lungs. what do i do to get it out of my lungs ?

Check temperature: The lung has defenses to remove particulate matter. Sometimes pneumonia may occur. If the cough persists, a fever occurs or you are having difficulty breathing, please see your physician.

: Aspiration of any foreign material would trigger repetative coughing spells. If this episode did not I wouldn't worry about it. If you do develop episodic coughing spells see your doc &amp; explain your concern.

Cough protects you: Aspirating happens quite commonly -I can't even count how many times I've taken a drink of water and it 'went down the wrong pipe'. The cough reflex is there to protect the lungs, and in ur case I would be almost certain ur body did what it was supposed to do -cough it OUT of the airways and back into the GI tract -oropharynx or esophagus. If cough persists, you have pain or other symptoms-see doc

i'm concerned. my 2 yo was laying on pillow drinking, started to cough and spit up then swallowed it. how do i know if he aspirated into his lungs?

Aspiration: If he continues to cough non stop and run a possible fever have him checked out at the er.

i have dysphasia and think i aspirated a little bit of mouth wash. what would happen? i was swishing and felt like i needed to breathe so i spit it out but i feel like i might have got some in lungs. my reflex is not all there?

: A small amount is not likely to be a problem. If you develop symptoms like fever, cough, sputum production, chest discomfort, shortness of breath, etc., then see a doctor ASAP. But, if you develop no symptoms and you are feeling ok, then there should be no problem. Best of luck to you!

i just took some cough medicine and apparently i didn't swallow well and it caused a coughing fit and felt like my lungs were closing up. every time i breath in through my nose it causes irritation in my throat and i cough again. possibly aspirated?

: It is possible you aspirated a small amount of the cough medicine. The reflex coughing that resulted will clear most of it our of your lungs and then you should be ok since it was likely only a small amount you took. If you develop other symptoms like shortness of breath, fever, not feeling well, etc, then call your doctor or go to the nearest emergency room. Good luck!

You will be ok: very unlikely to have caused aspiraion pneumonia .however if you continue to have symptoms see a physician to have a chest x ray to rule out aspiration pneumonia

Uncommon in healthy: In healthy normal people, it is uncommon to have food actually get into the lungs because people have an automatic cough reflex to spew out anything that accidentally goes toward the lungs... so stuff rarely makes it all the way to the lungs. If it makes it into the lungs, the person likely gets a persistent cough. That means coughs that last for weeks should be checked out by one's doctor.

Lung food...: There are no "lung strengthening" foods.  Quitting smoking (smoke harms the lungs) will improve your long term health more than any other action you take.  Marihuana smoke is denser than tobacco smoke and may lead to a higher risk of copd.  While you may feel great today, you will regret not quitting sooner than you think....
