Currently, the sole : diagnosis in the DSM-V is Autistic Spectrum Disorder Levels 1,2 &amp; 3.  ASD level 1, formerly Asperger Syndrome &amp;#40;AS&amp;#41; has the same underlying deficits in Theory Of Mind, face recognition &amp; joint attention as 2 &amp;3. However, the atypical microscopic structure of brains of children &amp; adults with &quot;AS&quot; &amp; &quot;Autism&quot; varies  enough that some researchers feel that they are different disorders. Stay tuned.

Aspergers is a mild: Form of autism. Autism is a disorder that interferes with  a person's ability to communicate or relate to others whichs starts early in childhood. When people speak about the autistic spectrum they are speaking about a range of degrees from mild to severe autism.

Interesting question: I'm not sure there is a good answer to your question. We have been learning more and more about Autism Spectrum Disorders, but there is still a lot to learn. The diagnosis has been evolving over the years, so it's difficult to know if everyone is talking about the same thing. It is clear that vaccines are NOT the cause of ASD problems- this has been studied quite extensively.

DSM childhood group: In the dsm (diagnostic statistical manual) catalogue of disorders, they are both part of a group called pervasive developmental disorders. It includes autism, Asperger syndrome, pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified (pdd-nos).
This is separate from obtaining financial support for having a disability - it would be likely, but not guaranteed that benefits could be obtained.

Many have non- verbal iq's of 90 or >, but low- or below- average verbal iq. Some, but not all, children with as have the opposite, with fsiq > 70 but lower non-verbal abilities.  Both lack theory of mind.
