what is the difference between asacol (mesalamine) and lialda. do some people have different side effects to one vs the other/?

See below: Both meselamine (5-amino-salicylic acid).Lialda is long-acting and is taken 2Xdaily.Asacol (mesalamine) is not long acting and is taken 3 Xs daily.Asacol (mesalamine) is no longer available in the U.S.but can be obtained in the rest of the world and it is MUCH cheaper than Lialda.You can fax your prescription to a Canadian pharmacy for asacol(different trade name but same thing) if u have to pay Lialda out of  pocket.Best

have a kidney stone, when i first started to pee blood few months ago i was taking lialda which im about to take again. can lialda cause kidney stones?

Unlikely: Mesalazine  can produce some kidney problems ( allergic nephritis ) but not reported to be a cause of renal stones. Regional ileitis can by a different mechanism. 
If stones recur see a nephrologist for a chemical analysis of the urine to see if you have secondary hyperoxaluria.

has lower back ache for few hours after taking asacol (mesalamine) . i am also on remicade for uc.  should i stop asacol (mesalamine)? had this effect while taking prednisone.

Possible: As you well know Asacol (mesalamine) is used to treat uc and the must common side effects are abdominal cramping and stomach ache and althogh back pain is a more rare side effect certainly is possible.Stop taken the medicine and see if the back pain goes away and if it does you know is the medicine, them you should discuss it with your physician.(never dc a medicine without first consulting with your dr.

can someone with less than 95% of kidney function survive on dialysis treatment?

Yes: That would be the reason to get on dialysis as the kidneys are not clearing out the toxins, so the dialysis machine does that. 2 types of dialysis-PD&amp;HD. Older people-above 70, tend get really wiped out after HD treatments which are 3 times a week. Survival time also depends on underlying other disease states and current functional status.

: CM diferentiation = CorticoMedullary differentiation. By renal US, the cortical and medullary sections (outer and inner) have different echogenic charaters and that difference is showed as corticomedullary differentiation. If the cortical section (renal parenchyma) is damaged and scarring (chronic) the echo character changes so there is no more echo differentiation between the two sections.

my kidney function was not so good 5 months ago, but still in normal range, now on ultrasound, one kidney is 100mm and other 90mm, is this normal?

Normal size: The renal length varies with height and weight and decreases slowly with age. Right kidney is usually slightly smaller than the Left. Normal size ranges from 9-12 cm (90-120 mm)  and the difference in size should not exceed 2 cm. **So the size of the kidneys is normal. Besides size the texture of the kidney(Its "Ecogenicity") is often increased in chronic renal disease.

can a kidney function blood test determine whether i have stones or kidney damage. i have frequent pain on my right side front side & back constantly?

Yes: A urinalysis typically will have blood. A serum blood test for BUN and creatinine will tell if you have damage such as hydronephrosis.

Unclear question: Not sure what your question is. If you're asking if they can tell how your kidney function is doing by checking your blood, then yes. Also, that msg they left is very general- please call back to clarify.  It can be as simple as being dehydrated on the day they took your labs, so they want to recheck.  Or one of your meds may be affecting your kidneys. Or your kidneys may be slowing down.

It depends: On the underlying kidney problem. Kidney function can be improved with medications, modification in diet, avoidance of toxic medications, good control of blood pressure, diabetes etc.

Accepted Answer

Low kidney function: It is not normal for someone your age to have low kidney function.  More details are needed.  Is this a chronic condition?  Acute?  Often medications, acute illness, dehydration, etc.. Can cause acute decrease in renal function.  You need to sit down and discuss this with your doctor and possible a nephrologist.
