what qualifies as a fever when taking an infant's temperature under his arm? i've heard a variety of answers and am a little confused.

Axillary temp: Temp taken under the arm tends to be 0.3-0.4 degrees (fahrenheit) below those taken by mouth. Normal temp varies depending on gender, recent activity, food & fluid consumption, time of day, &, in women, the stage of the menstrual cycle. According to the ama, fever = body temperature above 98.6° f orally or 99.8° f rectally; so that would be about 98.2 - 98.3ºf axillary.

i know a 18 year-old who has been in a spica cast from toes to armpits for four years now. i read online that spicas are usually worn by infants and only for a few months. what could possibly be causing his situation? i'm curious but ashamed to ask?

Kind concern: Spica casts function to immobilize the hips and upper legs in appropriate angles to allow healing of things like hip dysplasia, femur fractures or Hip fractures. Rarely, Spica casts have been used in Legg Calve Perthes disease where the head of the femur does not receive enough blood supply and begins to die at the hip joint. Don't be ashamed to show interest in your friends health and well-being!

: It is too early to tell. You just watch the symptoms for now. If the symptoms persists and get worse for another 48 hours, you can see a doctor by then. Mastitis is top of the problem list if symptoms persist. You should not concern about inflammatory breast cancer which does not behave that way.

Transient vs long tm: The forces  that occur in the moments of a delivery can place traction on nerves that come out of the neck & supply the arm.It is relatively common for arm to be limp for a while due to swelling around the nerves.Onset may be immediate or later after swelling occurs, most swelling subsides in a day or two & function returns.Some kids need therapy to recover, rare cases can be permanent.

Thorough eval: This kind of fracture at this age requires a thorough evaluation. A history of the event if known that preceded detection of the injury.An evaluation of the setting wherein it occurred & a minimum set of  x-rays over the all the long bones & ribs for other fractures.The orthopedist is a player in this event, but no more important than the team that covers the other issues.

Maybe: If the baby is otherwise eating and doing okay. Swelling of the site of vaccination is common. You do not need to worry just continue good hygiene and use warm compress for the area and try not to mess with it because it is also painful. If the baby is having other symptoms like not eating or high fever or anything else concerning then let a doctor recheck the baby.

Need evaluation: If your ASD was repaired as an infant, you're probably cured as far as that goes. Regarding tr, that's present in about 90% of normal people - no problem there. Chest heaviness in a 34 yo is unlikely to be cardiac unless you smoke or have diabetes but with all your symptoms, you need an evaluation with echo and stress testing at a minimum.
