Yes and No: Butt implants are safe but have a much higher complication rate than breast implants.  Choose your surgeon wisely.  Ask to speak to previous patients.  Check their board certification and don't go with someone with american board of cosmetic surgery.  It's not a recognized board in the United States.

Depends: Gluteal implants are safer than injected substances but not safer than fat transfers.   Butt injections are not approved in the unites states.  That means if you are getting them, it is by an unlicensed practitioner.  Every year in my area there are one or two deaths due to butt injections.

Butt Augmentation: Butt augmentation can be done with wither implants or fat injections.  Both are safe procedures, however there is a higher risk of infection with implants. Furthermore, if the implants get infected they will need to be removed.  All in all, you are correct that you should see a board-certified plastic surgeon to make the best decision for you.

Your own tissue.: Implants weren't there to start with, but your own cells were, so you can expect more problems from implants...Far more. I have had a wonderful experience with fat transfer to the buttocks, and very, very few complaints or problems. Furthermore the results do last, no matter what anyone says, and provide a natural shape, contour, and feel.

Fat grafting is another option for buttock enlargement, but can require more than one treatment and can also leave lumps, irregularities, scar tissue, or become infected, etc. Fat is living and lasts long-term; implants do not leak or break--should last long-term.

Implants vs fat: These are not equivalent. Fat grafting uses your own fat to accomplish buttock augmentation. Donor sites and associated risks are involved. Only a certain percentage of the fat survives which can vary tremendously. Implants are typically made of solid silicone and require an incision. Even in experienced hands implants may have a complication rate of up to 30% but may be the best option in thin pt.
