Lookin in wrong spot: The features you've noted are around the spine. The sensation you note would be related to things in the front of the neck. Well in front of the spine. An enlarged thyroid might give pressure symptoms, for example. Suggest you consult with your doctor for a good neck exam.

Yes You Can: You will get over this.  It is not over, at least not yet ;).  Start a physical therapy/exercise program, remember start slow and take your time to get back to health and strength.  Look at all those athletes out there in the world, they take their sweet time before getting back on the field.  It must all mean something...  Facet injections/Treatments are also helpful if you are not improving.

CT scan is best: Ct scanning is the best way to delineate bony pathology/anatomy anywhere in the body at this time.  It allows a radiologist the ability to look at the bones and joints in 3 d, so it is more sensitive than a 2 d xray in picking up even the most mild abnormality.

Unless: Inflammatory in origin (psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis), trauma can cause stress and injury that can lead to arthritis. There is still a chance some of  it may improve with time and therapy. Good luck.

Kind of: Early unless you had trauma, however if running long distances, repetitive micro trauma could lead calcification. Yes you can run, but analyze your gait and spine angle.
