Age and/or injury: Usually with age, facet joint degenerative changes occur as the discs become degenerative and narrow in height it alters the mechanics of the facet joints at the same levels. Injury to the joints and obesity which can overload the joints can lead to facet joint arthropathy or degeneration. Exercise may be protective.
