Many options: First make sure you are flossing your teeth daily and brushing your teeth and tongue twice daily. Go to your dentist to make sure you do not have gum disease and for a cleaning twice year. If you wear dentures, clean them daily. See your regular doctor for a physical and ensure you do not have lung, liver or kidney disease. If you smoke, quit. Stay hydrated, dry mouth can be a cause of halitosis.

Chlorhexadine: If a bacterial infection is the cause this medicinal mouthwash may be helpful.

Tongue scraping: Probably  the biggest cause of halitosis or bad breath is the accumulation of bacteria on the back of the tongue.  Look in the mirror and stick out your tongue you may see a white or yellowish coating on the back of your tongue.  Tongue scrapers are available at any drug store that gently remove this layer of bacteria.  Follow up with a good mouthwash and you will find a big improvement.

Find cause: Hallitosis can be a disheartening issue for many. To answer whether there is permanent remedy is impossible if the cause of it is unknown. The most common causes of halitosis are gastroesophageal reflux, chronic pharyngitis/rhinitis, poor dentition and poor oral hygiene, but in most cases it is unknown. It appears to change a lot in most people (some days you have it and then it goes away).

See dentist: Sounds like it could be a sinus problem.However periodontal disease can also cause this.
A home care problem may also be involved.
Brushing the tongue with an extra soft toothbrush twice daily is important. Also rinsing and gargling with an antimicrobial mouthwash may help. If not a dental visit is in order!

is there a medication that can cure halitosis? i brush and use mouthwashes, but i still have halitosis. it's not bad, but it's still embarrassing. are there any medications that can help?

There : There are many different causes that may be contributing to your problem. Without an exam, it's hard to tell, and the mouthwash only masks the problem. From a dental standpoint, you may have cavities which are full of decay, or you may have calculus on your teeth that needs to be scraped off. A visit to your dentist will let you know if you need any dental treatment, and he/she will be in a better position to advise you.

Bad breath: The physician who diagnosed your hiatal hernia should be able to suggest appropriate treatment for that. With all due respect, you may also have dental problems which may be causing your bad breath. Therefore i recommend you see a dentist for an exam and evaluation.

Gargle: If your tonsils have craters in them you can retain food particles which get rotton as well as bacteria.
Try gargleing with salene or try a water pic to flush the tonsils.
