hello, for months i've had a white coated tongue returning every day despite proper oral hygiene. i've tried antibiotics, lozenges, and gerd medication. i see my pc physician again next month, but i would like some insight on possible causes. ?

White tongue: May be Thrush, a fungal infection. Antibiotics will kill bacteria, permitting overgrowth of fungus. Treatable with specific anti-fungal meds. See your General Dentist for proper diagnosis and treatment.

could recent antibiotic use be the cause of excess gas and gerd-like symptoms in someone who did not have these issues prior to using the antibiotics?

Accepted Answer

Yes possible: Antibiotics can unfortunately kill the normal reidential "good" intestinal bacteria and cause such GI symptoms. Suggest you try a probiotic like lactinex to correct the problem. Good luck.

i took omeprazole for 1 month for gastritis, gerd. will this antibiotic cause any harmful long term effects to my body?

No: Omeprazole, which is not an antibiotic, by the way, is usually well-tolerated and will not cause permanent harm to your digestive tract. Any side effects will be gone shortly after stopping it. Some people require Omeprazole long-term for their GERD, and most people do not have any side effects while taking it. Good luck.

thank you in advance! what is the most common cause/s of esophageal candida in healthy people? ec 2 times in 3 years. hx gerd, celieac disease, longterm ppi use. hiv negative, not diabetic, no inhaled corticosteroids or antibiotics?

: By definition health people do not get Candida. Get checked for HIV, diabetes and immune status.

5 thrush infections in 1 yr, now vaginal infection. latest from antibiotic. on 15 days of 100mg fluconazole. have asthma/copd with non-steroidal inhaler. on cimzia/methotrexate for as. gerd is not controlled. can i be tested to find out main cause?

: Testing is not indicated because you are at risk for local or systemic candidiasis due to the current med combo for ankylosing spondylitis. Antibiotic use definitely increases the risk of thrush and urogenital yeast infection further.

Not clear: Gerd is generally an anatomic disorder of the "valve" between esophagus and stomach.  However, antibiotic regimens are used to treat h. Pylori infection in the stomach that is related to gastritis and ulcer disease.

PPI ?: Are you taking any medication to reduce your stomach's acid production? This can reduce the likelihood of damaging your throat.

5th straight positive for strep after 4 different rounds of antibiotics. keeps coming back 2 days later. can my gerd be causing this if i'm a carrier?

Shouldn't : Maybe you should see an ENT and be evaluated for a tonsillectomy. Depends on your total number of infections in a year.

GERD: Many antibiotics do come in injectable forms.  However, if your heartburn is that severe, I would encourage you to speak with your provider.  If not already done, you would benefit from an upper endoscopy to see what's going on in the upper GI tract.  You might also need twice daily PPI for a period of time.  You should have this checked.

my 1 yr old has gerd, allergies, & a dysphagia issue recently she's gotten worse& coughs violently nonstop.she's had antibiotics, what can we do now?

More doctoring: Are you working with allergy and GI specialists or just your pediatrician? Difficulty swallowing (dysphagia) in an infant or child with gerd and allergies raises the possibility of eosinophilic esophagitis (ee), a relatively newly-defined disorder allergic disorder which resembles but is different from gerd. Diagnosis requires esophageal endoscopy. Talk to your pediatrician about ee.
